The Ohakane Lodge is named after the Ovahimba word for the African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus). This wild animal has recently been added to the list of the endagered species in Namibia, after having been hunted virtually to extinction. The Wild Dog has incredible stamina. It is known for its tenacity and excellent group hunting skills. It is sometimes called the clown of the carnivores on account of its colorful, striped fur.
Through the sale of T-shirts in our curio shop we support a WWF research programm on the African Wild Dog which aims at ensuring the species' survival.
