Tourist Guide Association
of Namibia (T.A.N.)

1. By joining TAN, and getting all tour guides operating in Namibia to join, we are all supporting our own cause. Our Constitution stipulates that we should "promote, support, protect and develop all tour guide interests". At present TAN is an effective organisation with an energetic EXCO furthering the cause of the tour guides of Namibia.

2. With the present process set in motion by the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) to make the registration of tour guides in Namibia compulsory, TAN can play an important role in representing the interests of Tour Guides in this process.

3. A Standards Generating Body (SGB) has been appointed by the Government (the National Qualifications Authority - NQA) to determine minimum standards and curricula for tour guides registration by the NTB. TAN is a member of this SGB and will endeavour to ensure that reasonable and appropriate minimum standards as well as curricula for tour guiding in Namibia be devised and that recognition be provided to prior learning and experience to practising tour guides.

4. As a full member of FENATA since 1 April 2003, TAN is in the position to communicate on equal footing with TASA, HAN and other organisations in the Tourism Industry and in this way to effectively represent the interests of the tour guide in Namibia.

5. TAN will ensure that the status of the tour guide is upheld by providing a Code of Conduct for all Tour Guides in Namibia and by endeavouring to ensure that all Tour Guides act according to this Code of Conduct.

6. The secretariat of TAN is often requested by Tour Operators and tourists to provide names of persons to act as tour guides. Names of TAN members are provided according to a fair and just system in cases where TAN members have provided such written and signed consent.
