Hidden among the formations of the Lion's rock, lies Okapuka Ranch's latest jewel:

The Lodge's very own wine cellar.

True to the spirit of the ancient monks and forefathers of wine making, this cellar's architecture features the finest details, reflecting long time forgotten styles and philosophies, combined however, in today's interest, with modern, "state of the art" controlling systems.

The rural, adorable 18th century-charm clearly dominates the interior with rustic rock walls, supporting raw-stone, cross-dome ceiling sections, ivy ranked pillars forming a center aisle, leading to a huge wooden tasting platform, resting on hand-renovated oak barrels and wooden crafted window panes.

Soft ceiling lights, partially carved into roots of the African Mopane wood, illuminate 3, softly washed out, wall paintings of the South African artist Esthie Terblanche.

A rural, with iron adornments decorated, open fire place adds to the distinct atmosphere created in this guest room - and rightfully so - as it reflects traditional warmth and coziness, providing ideal facilities not only for those, who adore "wine in their prayers". - and those, who do, will find their salvation in the adjacent actual cellar.

Temperature and humidity controlled by 2 modern, powerful systems, rest the treasures of years of wine making knowledge and experience. Handcrafted African wood shelves form the base for some of the very finest, the world, and mainly South African estates have produced.

A variety for everybody though - featuring top estate blends and single cultivars, as well as excellent table wines to complement a meal, or to be enjoyed "with a good story to tell" - from fresh, crisp young wines to elegant, velvety-soft, or powerful old ones, from modern styles to old world aristocracy - honoring what has been as well as what is still to come.

The cellar's wine list (Diners Club Wine List of the year - Diamond Award), is a tribute to some of the world's finest, including also wines from France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Australia and the U.S.A. with vintages ranging from 1943 for one, to a 27 liter single bottle (courtesy of Rust en Vrede, Stellenbosch) for another.

A special section acknowledges top, accolade winning ports of outstanding quality and age, best enjoyed to the sound of a crackling camel thorn wood fire - elegant and smooth, noble and proud, timeless though real.

A cradle for "wine lovers" … - but this is a story, which remains to be told at some other time.
