...was the year, when 14000 ha of land changed owners hands;
it was the time, when Fritz and Monika Flachberger purchased
the plains 30 km North of Windhoek, afoot the Otjihavera mountains.
A few cattle and a farmhouse built in 1917, were the main
attractions of the area. Little did one know, back then, what
a vision and true pioneers' spirit would still accomplish.
...cattle was gradually faded out and gave way to the first
game in the area. The same year saw the end of construction
works at the mountain lodge, which, with its' 4 rooms,
conference facility, wooden adorned bar lounge and open fire
place, is granting the visitor a breathtaking view of the
spectacular landscape stretching towards the horizon.
... fences were completed, roads were built, camps were constructed
and even more game was introduced to the bush lands.
... the Ministry of Environment and Tourism had issued a
declaration regarding 2 "problem lions" to be hunted down
and shot in the Etosha National park.
Qualified hunters, trackers with vehicles and even the
ancient ways of the bushmen were employed to fulfill this
task - however, to no avail. It was then, that Fritz Flachberger
obtained permission to relocate these lions, if caught, to Okapuka.
The hunting venture was successfully attempted by helicopter,
with the tranquilized animals suffering no harm.
The "King of beasts" had found a new home !
... and since then 5 litters were born at Okapuka.
... saw the completion of a huge thatch dome Lapa, hosting a restaurant
and bar area, both for residents and day visitors alike.
20 comfortable thatch-roofed rooms with ensuite bathrooms /
toilet facilities, nestling along the edges of the dense bush,
were launched.
...an 800 m² roof is resting on earthen-clay coloured brick
walls, hosting 12 brand new stables of Mexican architecture -
home of Okapuka Horse Safaris' pure bred Arabians and Arabian
crosses, which lead the way for trail riding tours of the future.
New telephone lines, just completed, were yet another step in
Okapuka's progress and strive, to provide its' guests and
visitors with the luxury and comfort of modern times.
A rustic wine cellar and a honey moon suite complete the range on offer,
which turns dreams into reality - yet it remains a jewel, lying in the
vast bush savannah, gently sloping towards the Otjihavera mountains.
A jewel of ancient times, when game was roaming the plains freely
and in abundance - and this to preserve is Okapuka's past, its' presence and
its' future !
