The farm is situated 160 km west of Windhoek on the road D1982 to the coast,
160 km east of Walvisbay, 200 km from Swakopmund and 260 km from Sesriem.
The size size of the farm is 18.535 ha, as big as the Principality of Liechtenstein
or the island of Fehmarn.
The name: the first owner, a former soldier of the German colonial army (Schutztruppe) decided on
the name Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony). His successor, Mr. Siedentopf senior also
hailed from Niedersachsen, and your hostess, Mrs. Barbara Ahlert, is now the successor
of the former Niedersachsen. The farm, which lies on the outskirts of the Namib desert,
could survive only by karakul sheep breeding (Persian lamb skin) since 1922. As demand
and revenue for skins dropped, the present owners started to make the landscape and the
attractions of the border desert area accessible to the tourists. Karakul-sheep-breeding
is however still done on a small scale.
The house: A castle-like complex on a centrally situated mountain above the river
valleys. From here you have a unique panorama view at the Khomas mountains 20 km
distant and the well-known Gamsberg.
