Attractions
Once you have made it to this far corner of Namibia and finally find yourself standing at the Kunene River, watching it flow through the most spectacular desert scenery - you will then know that the effort was well worth it.

Okarohombo Campsite is situated where the Marienfluss Valley meets the Kunene River. Himba people inhabit this remote area of incomparable natural beauty. They have lived in this area for centuries and have adapted to the harsh conditions.

You are welcome to approach the local people and learn more about their life. Other activities include exploring a variety of trails or go birdwatching along the river. You will definitely not tire of watching desert wildlife such as Springbok, Oryx and Ostrich.

Okarohombo offers five secluded campsites (3 to 4 tents each) in the shade of large trees. There are braai areas and water taps, as well as showers and flush toilets.

Please note: The Marienfluss Valley can only be accessed by four-wheel drive. Firewood is in very short supply - please bring your own or use a gas cooker.
There are crocodiles in the Kunene River - please be extremely careful!

Location
Where the Marienfluss Valley opens onto the Kunene River, in the northernmost part of the Kunene Region; the distance from Opuwo is about 230 km.

How to get there
From Opuwo you take the gravel road D 3703 to Etanga and Otjitanda, where you turn left towards Van Zyl's Pass. After crossing over the pass you enter the Marienfluss Valley. Okarohombo Campsite is situated on the bank of the Kunene River. Follow the signposts. The Van Zyl's Pass can only be negotiated by 4x4 and is the ultimate challenge for experienced drivers. Please exercise the utmost care!
An alternative route is the gravel road D 3707 from Sesfontein via Purros, Orupembe, Otjihaa and "Red Drum". Tourists usually prefer this route because it is less difficult than Van Zyl's Pass, but it also requires four-wheel drive.
