NAMIB NAUKLUFT PARK

This park comprises 40 000 km² and is one of the largest nature conservation areas in the world. It contains mainly arid and semi-arid ecosystems. The park comprises four sections: Sesriem & Sossusvlei, the Naukluft section, the Namib section (between Kuiseb and Swakop Rivers), and Sandwich Harbour.

Accommodation:



Camping sites at: Kuiseb Bridge; Mirabib, Homeb, Kriess-se-Rus, Vogelfederberg, Bloedkoppie, Tinkas and Ganab. Visitors must provide own camping equipment, food, water and fire wood. Permits are necessary when travelling on indicated tourist roads and for camping. No permits are required when travelling on the public roads (C14, C28, D1982, D1998) through the park. Permits for the Namib Section can be obtained at Hardap, Sesriem, Lüderitz and the Swakopmund Resort Office (Bismarck Street), or at the Central Reservation Office in Windhoek. During weekends permits may also be obtained from Hans Kries Service Station and My Lounge in Swakopmund and in Walvis Bay at: Omega, Suidwes, CWB and E-Four Service Station and Anglers Kiosk.

Sossusvlei: (Day visitors during flooding)
When Sossusvlei is flooded, day visitors will be charged over and above the Park Usage Fee as follows:
1. Car with four or less persons: N$ 100.00
2. Additional person (adult): N$ 20.00
3. Additional person (child 6-16): N$ 5.00

Sesriem Camping Site:


Entrance for overnight and day visitors only between sunrise and sunset. 18 Camping sites available at Sesriem (no camping at Sossusvlei) with communal ablution facilities. No bungalows or tents available. Fuel, fire wood, a kiosk and a bar are available.

The Sesriem Canyon and Sossusvlei may be visited between sunrise and sunset only. The distance to Sossusvlei, with some of the highest dunes in the world, is 63 km. Ordinary sedan cars can travel up to the start of the vlei, but the last 4 km are only negotiable by 4-wheel-drive vehicles.

Due to the limited number of camping sites, reservations for Sesriem should be made well in advance, especially during school holidays.



Naukluft:
Accommodation: camping sites with communal ablution facilities. Fire wood available, but no shop, kiosk, fuel. Short hiking routes and two well-marked trails of 10km and 17km exist, where day visitors are allowed.


Naukluft Hiking Trail:
(12 people for 8 days or 12 people for 4 days)

A 120 km trail to be completet in 8 days, or only the first part in 4 days. Due to climate conditions, the trail is open from  March 1st to the third Friday in October only. Trail starts on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays of the first 3 weeks of each month. Camping facilities and water are available at stop-over points. Groups have to consist of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 12 persons and must provide their own food and equipment. The fees include accommodation in the old farmhouse at Naukluft the day before the trail begins and at the end of the trail. Bookings only through the Central Reservations Office in Windhoek.



Naukluft Four-wheel-drive Trail:
A self-guided trail for four-wheel-drive vehicles, 73 km long, to be completed in 2 days. Please check in at the Naukluft office not later than 14:00. The overnight camp consists of partially open shelters, toilets, shower and water. Own camping equipment, food and fire wood required. A group should not comprise of more than 4 vehicles and 16 persons. N$ 220-00 per vehicle are payable, which include the cost of the trails accommodation. Bookings only through the Central Reservations Office in Windhoek.



Welwitschia Trail: (Park Usage fee applicable)
Motorists may undertake a self-guided trail through the "moon landscape" to the Great Welwitschia plant. A permit is required. Further information, pamphlets and permits available from the Swakopmund Reservations Office (Woermann Haus).



Sandwich Harbour: (Park Usage fee applicable)
Only open to day visitors between sunrise and sunset. No camping. Only four-wheel-drive vehicles allowed. No angling between January 25  and April 15 . Entry permits available at the Swakopmund Reservations Office (Woermann Haus), Hans Kries Service Station and My Lounge in Swakopmund, or CWB, Omega, Suidwes & E-Four Service Station, Anglers Kiosk in Walvis Bay.
